AcademiA™ was developed by a West Indian, for West Indian schools, colleges, and other private learning institutions. The developer, Fidel A. Captain, has lectured at a community college in the British Virgin Islands for over four years and used his knowledge and in-depth understanding of course schedules, grading student assessments, and calculating final grades, to design this database application.

Security:
- User name and password required for every user.
- Every user is at a specific user level - Student, Lecturer, Registrar Staff.

Navigation:
- A simple, fixed, left menu provides all navigation.
- There are no sub-menus or hidden menu items.
- There is a consistent look and feel accross all pages.
Schedules:
- The code, name and description of a course is only entered once.
- One course can have many schedules allowing for multiple sections.
- Customised schedules for individual departments.
Assessments:
- Scores for every assessment by every student can be recorded.
- Students can view their progress throughout the semester.
- Specific assessments can be omitted from the final grade by the lecturer.
Grades:
- Grades are calculated automatically at the end of the semester based on assessment scores.
- Once grades have been posted students can view them.
- Only authorized users can view a student's grades.
